Have You Ever Been to a Contra Dance?
Contra Dancing Celebrates the Energy of Life Through Joyful Movements.
“This incredible synergy and spirit develops when enthusiastic dancers unite with smoking-hot music.” — unknown
Contra dancing is a walking-type dance form. You don’t need to take expensive classes; you don’t need to bring your own partner; and you get plenty of exercise while meeting wonderful people. It’s the best three hours of each month!
Never Done Contra Before? No Problem!
Every Contra dance event includes a basic instruction half-hour before the main dancing begins. You’ll get the idea quickly — it’s like what you’d get if you crossed Square Dancing with the Minuet.
A smooth walk set to music is your basic step. Kids from 9 up to 90 can do this.
And during each dance? The Caller first walks everyone through the figures, then calls out helpful reminders while you’re actually dancing. Experienced dancers also gently help you get where you need to be – after all, they were beginners once themselves.
No Partner? That’s Fine – Just COME
Plenty of other singles come to our dances. For each dance, you’ll pair up with a different dancer (usually). You and your partner generally form up in two long lines, known as a Set.
Each couple moves up or down this long Set throughout the dance – helped allong by lively heart-pounding music.
So you’ll find yourself dancing with every person in the whole set before the dance is done. What a great way to meet some really fantastic people!
“A Contra Dance is like an amusement park ride we make for ourselves.” — unknown
No Fancy Clothing Required
You need to be comfortable, to move freely. And you need soft-soled shoes such as running shoes or sneakers. That’s it!
Sure, if you feel compelled to dress up like a Gypsy or a Medieval Peasant, that certainly enhances everyone’s experience. Free spirits are definitely allowed!
So give it a whirl. Come to _____ the second Satudray night of each month and check it out for yourself.
